Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition

Kate Upton

Kate Upton Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition

Kate Upton is the featured bathing beauty on Sport Illustrated 2012 swimsuit issue. What she is wearing, or should I say NOT wearing, is causing a mini controversy. Basically, the chick has nipple covers and a matching dinner napkin as a bottom. At least that’s what it looks like. Granted, I like the color scheme and if it actually covered anything, it might be worth wearing to a public beach for sunbathing. As it happens, a hard thought might send it sliding off, much to the pleasure of most male “readers” of SI.

Why did I post this in my Athletic Swimwear blog? Because a lot of people are subscribed to, or at least occasionally purchase, Sports Illustrated. In my opinion, there is nothing sporty or athletic about what Kate Upton is wearing, but the experts are right when they say that sex sells. Secondly, there is a lot of controversy over the “skimpiness” of her attire. Really? It’s a bikini, people! They aren’t designed to cover much, only enough so that tender areas don’t burn in the sun. SI is just trying to get people to buy the magazine. It’s about marketing, not about offending sensibilities.

Good for you, Kate! Voted Rookie of the Year by SI in 2011, maybe you were a shoe-in for the cover this year. Regardless of how you got on the cover, I dig it! If you got it, flaunt it.

NYC Fashion Week

NYC is wrapping up the MB fashion week. What a show! As promised, the trends are tropical and colorful, with a special emphasis on animal prints. Also, Nicolita especially, is bringing back some of the vintage-style highlights of the 60s and 70s. Something else to look out for on the beaches or by the pools in terms of fashion is the strap. Thick straps, thin straps and everything in between promise to make a huge hit. Even in the  latest designs from the leading brands for sports swimwear, straps are appearing everywhere. Not a bad idea in terms of support and structure.

One other notable mention from Fashion Week is the upsurge of monokinis! Lots of combinations with colors, snake prints, animal prints and bold sunset colors show up in the form of monokinis and tankinis alike. Cross overs with straps and tribal colors have also been seen by designers such as A.Z. Araujo, Cia Maritima and Zingara.

Athletic Swimwear: Review and Trends

Wake-boarding in athletic swimwear

Wake-boarding in athletic swimwear

Athletic swimwear has changed over the years. Today, with the world’s eyes on fitness and fashion, athletic swimwear is gaining more attention than ever. Who wouldn’t want to look like a God surfing on the Malibu Shores (or Chadwich Beach, whatever)? The point is, you gotta look good.

Sooo, if you’re into water sports, or interested in people interested in water sports, this is for you! Top quality, name brand athletic swimwear is what you need for the hottest hot spots in Summer 2012. TYR, Dolphin, Speedo, Hurley… yada yada! The bottom line is that if you are going to be around water at all this Summer, you need to follow these guidelines:

Gentlemen! Put a little color on and get wild, the ladies love it when you stand out. But if you decide to go with dark, ominous or emo, just remember this: Classic.

Keep it snug on the back end. I’ve never seen sexy plumber’s crack.Oh, and the swim shorts are getting a little shorter, so you might want to take a few extra minutes and work on some squats to get those legs hard or go tanning above the knee.

Ladies! It’s party time this summer, so go techno with your swimsuits this year. Be eye-catching without the bedazzle. Those dang rhinestones will fall off by July anyway, and then you’ll just look stupid.

For the athletic women, all you lovely ladies need to remember is that winning is 74% willpower, 26% Lycra. So go grab a Speedo and be the first one to smack that bar in your open back Fastskin3. Yeah, you know you want it.

Today’s trends are heading towards the tropical. America has had enough on its plate with the recession, job loss and gas prices fluctuation from high to higher then back down to high. We need  a break! You worked hard all year, why not head to an island? Or at least a pool. Snake prints and flocked animal patterns seem to be the look of the day, with the overall style resembling that of the mid 70s. Keep your style looking tropic with bold, colorful waves, acid shades and metallic foil designs. If you want to be a little bit on the low-key end, try out some watercolor floral or shadowy digital prints. They might not be as eye-catching, but they are still en vogue enough to avoid the attention of the local fashion police.  For those of you who couldn’t care less about fashion when you shop for swimwear because it’s all about how you perform, the best plan of action is to stick with name brands: Speedo, Under Armour, Hurley, Quicksilver, and many more. They tend to be the most reliable when looking for a suit that won’t slip, slide or fall short. Also remember that you get what you pay for in terms of the quality of material.

Whether it’s for practice, boarding, racing lounging, athletic swimwear is an important investment for your 2012 summer wardrobe. Even better news is that there are TONS of these items at low prices because of the terrible economy. So be patriot and get out there to support our business. Splurge on a name-brand swimsuit that you won’t mind taking pictures in. You’ve worked hard all winter for your money, now make it work hard for you.
